The key to creating what you want is first, knowing what you want. Obvious, right?

Yet so many people say they haven’t got a clue what they want.

I don’t believe them.

Everyone knows what they want. I’d go so far as to say, what you truly, deeply desire is pre-wired in you. Not destined, which implies it will happen in spite of you, but imbeded like a navigational setting designed to keep you on course. You are never given a desire without the capacity to reach it.

So why then do so many of us feel stumped when asked, what do you want?

The biggest reason is a preoccupation with the How. When we think a dream is impossible it becomes invisible to us. When a desire arises people immediately jump to how is it possible, how to go from here to there, and are met with a lot of ??? and beliefs that block them. Then fear, as frustration, disappointment, lack, expands. Fear is a very uncomfortable feeling and rather than experience it we often abandon whatever preceded it, even our own desires.

Leave the how alone.

Nurture the what – your deep desires. Follow your nose. Let your curiosity guide you and watch the how unfold.

Once you realize your only job is to make room for your desires, you can get really clear about what they are. Feel them, hear them, sense them, taste them, and bring them to life in your heart. Then, hand them to your mind and let your body create them.

Always start with what you want, and know how will always reveal itself.

It’s your choice.

When you are focused on everything around you it’s impossible to feel safe and secure and on top of things for long. You just can’t control everything. There are endless changing variables beyond your influence. It’s a no win game.

However when you focus inward and concentrate on you, managing your health, your emotions, your mindset and your actions, you become a force of nature. You are prepared for anything that shows up. You are as equally prepared to handle obstacles as recognize opportunities. You are able to choose your actions giving you far more control than you could ever hope to achieve by attempting to micro manage your world. When you manage yourself well, it becomes a no lose game.

Everyone has heard about Finding Your Passion and Following Your Bliss but something about this is off. It’s the implication that living your best, most passionate life is a matter of locating it outside yourself and hanging on for dear life. It can leave you feeling exhausted, lacking and disillusioned. It leaves you asking why bother and wondering if it is better to settle, and be satisfied that where you are is good enough.

These popularized mantras feel off because they point your attention outward instead of inward where your passions reside.

Know Thyself is a faster, more direct route to creating a passionate, fulfilling life. You exist as an expression of your soul’s desire. You are the manifestation of passion. Your passion is not a separate thing. You were born of a passion that sought expression as your life. That you exist is the bliss.

You exist as an expression of divine love. Let that knowledge be your guide and always move in the direction of pure joy.

To be authentic, you must know thyself. To have clarity, you must know thyself. To experience deep love, you must know thyself. To know thyself is to understand the passion that underlies your very reason for being.

Following up on my post about TMID – Too Much Information Disorder, Mr. Seth Godin sent out a post about NOISE which I must say is ironic being a huge, daily contributor to it that he is.

My question goes out in response – Is it noise if no one hears it?

The way I see it, posting to the internet is a relatively quiet experience – thoughts travel through fingers to keyboards and emerge across the screen silent and temporary until the send button is depressed and the words go out to wait for other eyes to read them. But until that happens there is silence. The words remain unheard. The reader, not the writer, makes the noise.

Go ahead and get noisy in the comments below about who you think is responsible for the noise and if is it really a problem at all.

Mark my words.

In the next journal of psychiatric malfunctions there will be a listing called TMID – Too Much Information Disorder.

I know this because I have it.

If you think you might be suffering from TMID too, here’s the cure:

Turn away. Trust this step. The stuff will still be there whenever you turn around. In fact, it will keep growing. If the idea of going cold turkey gives you withdrawal shakes, don’t worry. There is a line of eager info pushers ready to take your cash for a click load of crap to numb your anxiety day or night.

So for now, Turn Away.

All you need, you already have.

Walk away from the crowd and the noise and the drowning of the info machine.

What you are looking for isn’t there.

You already own it. You were just too distracted to notice.

You’ve been too busy learning how the other guy does it, racing to keep up with the ever-changing business models, wooed by another get rich quick scheme, and lists of 7 things….

Who can blame you?

You have mouths to feed, preferably with local organics, and debt to juggle, and your virtual social empire to placate, while you go green with pandemic updates, terrorizing your fear circuits, because you no longer cry over spilt milk, but oil destroying the gulf.

I’m taking a chance here that you are still with me and not weeping onto your keyboard.

Hold on. This is where it gets better.

Easier.

Kinder.

Richer.

Way more fun.

The only information you need to pay attention to comes from the voice of your inner knowing.

There are millions of people in the world to date but you could never get to them all. It’s the same for all the information to consume. You are never going to get to it all. Stop trying.

Instead, get clear about who you are, what matters most to you, and what you want. Filter. Let everything that’s not for you, go. Then like an attentive lover, pour your heart into only what you value.

Feel free to share three things you truly value in the comments below.
Declaring them out loud has a way of doing the filtering work for you.

I’ve never idolized the young. I wasted my skinny youth never feeling completely at home in what today is coveted by so many, the freshness of our twenties. I looked up to older women, those who were more established and had an air of confidence backed by the wisdom that comes from having lived long enough to know there really is no such thing as wisdom but an emerging style of taking life in stride. At least that’s how it looked to me, the idea of feeling grown-up. Then with my thirties a complete blur of chaos, snuggles, enchantment, nagging overwhelm and striving as I raised my four children, I looked forward to the space on the horizon where I could exhale and reflect on the family we’d become growing up a reflection of each other.

My great grandmother lived until she was 106 and by all accounts I idolized her. She represented spunk, style and serenity in one petite package and I wanted to be like her. My other grandmothers represented other qualities I also admired and knew I would one day emulate. My favourite women were women of a certain age, not feckless girls. I was a serious teen with strong features. I was told I would grow into both. It’s true, I did. As I’ve aged I’ve become more comfortable in my own skin while many of my peers feel less so, agonizing over the lines around their eyes and the grey in their manes. To me both these things remind me of how far I’ve come not how little time I’ve got left.

Today as I read Nora Ephron’s latest book, ‘I Remember Nothing’, I am drawn to her and the perspective she holds, that magical place at the peak where she can see and keenly appreciate where she has been and can take in the view of what may lie ahead. She knows enough to know, knowing is over-rated, you know? It’s a moment of awakening where everything swirls together – those bits of optimistic hope, regrets, gratitudes, grieving, wonder and an abandonment of the extraneous, sometimes in trade for the frivolous.

So here I am, in contrast to most of my peers, loving who I’ve become, embracing this age of knowing I’ll never arrive because the destination keeps changing and enjoying the unknown. I have hope but am no longer naïve about it. More than anything I’m drawn to slow down, soak it all in so the next portion is not a blur as was the portion before and just in case my memory takes leave, my body will hold the sensations of a life well-lived.

In the end I don’t think I’m anything like the women I aspired to be in spite of the fact that I still hold a vision of their essence at the forefront. Now that I’m here, what I’ve discovered is that vision is actually my essence as I become more and more myself. In fact I suspect it was my future self beckoning. And I like her. I really, really like her.

How about you? What have you discovered about who you are as you become More Yourself?

Your personality is a crazy combination of bits of your essence mixed with bits of other people’s styles you’ve adopted and adapted, plus beliefs and behaviours you’ve formed based on your experiences and environment.

Your personality can be confusing, unpredictable, inconsistent. There is nothing really solid to lock on to. It can leave others feeling uneasy, guarded or disconnected from you because your personality is more a costume you wear than who you really are.

Unlike your personality, you don’t create your essence. It’s who you are at your very core. You allow it to be expressed.

The more of your essence you express, the purer your personality becomes.

Your essence is the way you laugh unprovoked, the light in your eyes, your easy composure, your natural stance, the way you listen and respond with genuine interest and compassion. It’s the purest expression of your soul.

And authenticity, the latest *it* factor getting so much attention when building your brand and your business, is when your personality = your essence.

When there is seamless alignment of your personality with your essence, what is born is your signature style. There is no mistaking who you are. You cease to be a hybrid of other people’s styles.

And everyone around you can feel it.

That’s what makes you magnetic and why authenticity is so coveted.

People want to be around you because you are the real deal. Your signature style clears the way for honest connections and is powerful because it is empowering. When you embrace who you are, it frees others to be themselves.

There is immense relief and unburdening when in the company of another with whom you can put down your guard, exhale slowly, and share openly. It’s what we all yearn for beneath all the trappings and cover stories. To simply belong, be known and beloved.

There are two types of energy.
1. Your physical energy expressed in your body’s health and vitality. You can boost this by getting sleep, exercise and good nutrition.

2. Your soul energy expressed in your life force. You can boost this by being fully present. This energy is eternal and fully connected to all energy but too often is splayed across time zones your physical body isn’t currently occupying.

Call forth the energy of your soul into this moment. Release it from the past. Pull it back from the future. Detach it from the stories of your mind. Unhook it from the dramas of your loved ones. Call it back into your yard, your life, your body.

Feel it fire up your cells. Focus it on their healing, growth and renewal. Feel it course through your heart and fill your mind. Bring forth your quest. Heed your call. Sharpen your focus. Fulfill your mission. Your energy has a purpose required here in this world at this time.

As you harness your energy right here, right now, where all knowledge and wisdom and reason exists, the love you are will know the way. Let it lead you.
